Bringing Water Into Your Garden

A little still water changes a garden completely. How a raised sleeper pond brings light, movement and wildlife to even the smallest plot.

Water has a way of settling a garden. Even a small pool catches the light, mirrors the sky and gives birds and insects somewhere to drink and bathe. You do not need a large plot or a complicated design to enjoy it.

Start with where you sit

The best spot for water is usually the one you look at most. A pond beside a patio or along the path to the door means you see it every day, in every season, rather than only when you make a trip to the bottom of the garden.

Raised ponds keep things simple

A raised sleeper pond sits above ground, so there is no digging into unknown soil and no spoiling an established lawn. The timber frame warms the water a little, gives you somewhere to perch with a coffee, and doubles as informal seating at the edge of a terrace.

Let the plants do the work

A handful of marginal plants and an oxygenator will do more for clear, healthy water than any amount of tinkering. Choose two or three varieties you like, give them a season to settle in, and resist the urge to overplant.
